HOLIDAY
LIGHTS PROGRAM –
Holiday Lights will be lit on
November 26th. This year we have lights
twinkling at the corner of Arbutus
and Chalon Roads, more trees are
lit, and new additions
in the 2600 block of MCR. MCA
has upgraded the electrical capacity
at the entrance to Mandeville and
several homes to insure that the
lights stay lit.
We need your donations
to make our most-loved program even
better.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
FIRE
ON THE WESTSIDE
Quick & Efficient LAFD
Response Diverts Disaster
All of
Mandeville Canyon is grateful
for the quick
and expedient response of our LAFD
and LAPD crews last month as fire
ripped its way to the ridges
bordering our Canyon. The fire
burned about 100 acres near
Interstate 405 for more than seven
hours before 400 firefighters were
able to get it under control.
Mandeville Canyon was under a
potential evacuation order. Lead
Officer Phil Enbody kept us posted
every 30 minutes as to developments and
your Board and Block Captains stood
ready with lists to contact
neighbors. Thankfully there were
no injuries and our brave firemen
were able to manage the fire even
with the high winds that picked up
at daybreak. We all owe our valiant
firemen, especially our very own
Station 19 guys, a hearty thank you
during this time of thanks and hope.
HELPING
OUR FIREFIGHTERS
A Neighbor’s 1st
Hand Experience – October 23, 2008
We dodged a bullet
this time; thankfully the fire was
stopped before Mandeville. We also
learned from it. Or we can, if we
apply what we learned. It was early
morning and completely dark outside.
A strike team from Gardena arrived
at our house ready to make a stand.
One of the firemen had pertinent
questions that in the dead of night
were not obvious to him. What he
asked of me I knew a lot, but in
that moment not enough. “Where are
the residences with pools we can
pump from? Who has their own pool
fire pumps; where is the street
hydrant? Who was in the last fire to
this area? Where did it come from
and where did it go? What were the
winds like then?” As I spouted
off information, I knew I was good
for my house and the pertinent
information on pools for residences
at least two houses in either
direction from me, but not more. The
firemen have the ability to pump
pool water from their engine s and
use pools as their water source. It
expands their coverage and in a bad
situation may be their only source
of water. I began to think how could
we Canyonites be the most effective
to firemen in the
least amount of time. If we create a
voluntary address water source map
by addresses to show street hydrants
which the firemen could not locate
this time, along with pool locations
and houses with pools and pumps.
This could be on the canyon web site
and downloadable to everyone. Our
Gardena strike team was more than
happy to serve. Our giving them the
resources to succeed makes their job
safer and more likely to be
successful. Next time lets hand them
a water source map with their
coffee.
A
THANKSGIVING DAY DOG TALE
Canyonites
Rescue Hercules the Dog and Say
Welcome to a New Family!
It’s a miracle in the making! A lost
Yorkie reunited with his family
after running 2 miles up the canyon
in the middle of the road! The tale
began with a barely 6 pound, 3 year
old pooch who moved recently into a
new home at the corner of Sunset and
Mandeville. Hercules,
confused in his new home, escaped
and started running
up the canyon. Followed by the love
and grace of our canyon neighbors,
he was rigorously
protected and cared for during his
amazing two mile journey! A dark SUV
directly behind the pooch
spearheaded the entire rescue by
keeping the traffic at bay,
honking
his horn to alert oncoming drivers
which also brought out other
neighbors, all trying to
s ave
the wily dog. Although small,
Hercules out maneuvered those trying
to help
him. Three cars
back from the lead SUV, older kids
from Shadow Canyon Lane saw the
situation,
called home asking their father to
wait in the canyon ahead of the
pooch no one could
stop. He successfully diverted the
pooch onto Shadow Canyon Lane, freeing
up the 20-car motorcade on
Mandeville. A Yorkie at full
steam for two miles can only go so
fast. But the pooch’s
problems did not end and the rescue
continued. Hercules hid himself
under flood channel ditch boards
sealed for 100 feet. The ensuing
rescue involving several Shadow
Canyon neighbors and kids rapidly
pulling up the boards to save him.
It was a great success ending with
our new residents reunited with
their beloved dog. The Furbert
Family said, “We are just so
thankful!” The Shadow Canyon
neighbors were glad to help, the youngest
kids were heard saying, “This is
the best day ever!” The neighbor who
pull the yellow shirted Yorkie out
of peril said, “My major worry after
I rescued him was how will I cope
bringing him into my home with 5
members and multiple dogs even
temporarily. I prayed he had a tag
on him and thankfully he did! This
allowed us to reunite him
immediately.” Hercules is safe
thanks to our Mandeville Canyon
neighbors who deserve a lot of
credit for taking the time, love and
care to protect its own.
