Bike Ride In Mandeville Canyon on Labor Day

On behalf of you MCA Board we wish you a restful Labor Day Weekend. Look for MCA At Work signs popping up throughout the Canyon as much work is being undertaken to improve safe passage for pedestrians and motorists alike. Special attention is being given to the Chalon area. Long-time resident, George Fenimore, has graciously allowed MCA to install split-rail fencing around his corner property at Chalon and Arbutus. A bench will be coming soon for residents and visitors alike to relax and enjoy the moment.

BIKE RIDE IN MANDEVILLE CANYON ON LABOR DAY

There is to be a bike ride that will take place in Mandeville Canyon on Labor Day. This ride, known as the Holiday Ride, is one of a series of rides that takes place on most national holidays. This ride is not organized by any club, instead it is part of the bicycle culture and history of this region. Like many ongoing socio-cultural events, it is a word of mouth event that takes place and is passed on through the years. The ride begins in Manhattan Beach, but as the group moves north through the beach cities, Venice, Santa Monica, and finally West Los Angeles. Riders catch on wherever they please. The goal of the ride is to reach the top of Mandeville Canyon.

The ride leaves the Manhattan Beach area at about 8:00 a.m., and generally takes about 70 to 90 minutes to reach Sunset and Mandeville. This time frame is a real guesstimate due to the unknown make up of any of the Holiday Rides. It then takes about 20 to 40 minutes for most riders to reach the top of Mandeville before turning around and heading home.

The number of riders is never known due to its unorganized organization. Neither do the riders belong to any one particular organization. It is our hope that all participants, observers, and motorists are aware of the various issues in using the public streets safely and in a courteous fashion. Enjoy.
